Interview
We are very pleased to welcome Ren Yagami, one of the most internationally renowned artists in his field, to obscene. To give our visitors a comprehensive insight into his work and artistic approach, we conducted an interview with him in March 2026.
Ren Yagami’s answers were translated from Japanese into English by Ms. Asako – our sincere thanks to her for her support.
On your website, you distinguish between "Semenawa" and "Sekibaku." Why is this distinction important to you – and how would you describe what you yourself do?
"SEKIBAKU" is a term that expresses the concept of my style. It means that the act of tying SHIBARU itself exists as a process, not aiming for the completion of a specific KATA or finishing patterns.
For me, tying is the primal…. the communication between myself and a partner. While the Japanese word "SEMERU" (to blame) generally means inflicting physical or mental pain, but its meaning changes within contextual use.
In the world of KINBAKU, "SEMERU" carries the connotations of "persistency" or "obsessively clingy”
The word "SEKIBAKU" combines these two meanings, persistence in obsessing with excessive arousal or orgasms, being sexually persistent to create pleasures or sexual gratification, and of course the entire process is the persistent pleasures and it’s far from pain chasing bondage.
To explain and compare to the rest of Shibari scenes, they normally use ropes to ignore communication, silence the partners physically and mentally, and is performed through a specific process to finish a tie, a KATA, a form or Shibari Name is slightly different from "SEKIBAKU” which I came to express my way.
My style has become more widely appreciated around the world that I no longer need to explain the term SEKIBAKU, it's now simply referred to as YAGAMI STYLE.
You say that the tension does not come from the rope alone, but from your own presence. How do you develop this energy – and what does it mean to you?
In order to seek sexual enjoyment or pleasure requires Tension and Excitement. They are absolutely necessary to create sexual pleasures that is my obsession.
My background is in ancient Japanese martial arts, and I use them everyday. Japanese martial arts which forces me to use “life-or-death” mentality and techniques that are often said to produce highly effective and primal tension if techniques are applied effectively.
I’m not trying to brag about… but I have been having GOOD and badass sex! but really simply put, it's by engaging in sex that involves high tension and excitement.
My style appeals to a wide range of people, from vanilla to those with more fetish oriented. I have a large following… and the commonality is that they simply enjoy sex.
Whether it's physical or mental sex, they enjoy the pleasure of sharing it with their PARTNERS
My basic philosophy, Yagami style is for better sex, enhancing sexual arousals which change the energy to better rope connections. I believe my tension comes from the life-or-death worldview of martial arts, I have accumulated the understanding of what can kill so I can be responsible and create that centimeter before kill tension! and the act of sex that brings LIFE to this world through act of SEX! the tension created by the combination of these two things, I believe is the source of my energy.
In Europe, bondage is often perceived as highly aestheticized or sometimes even desexualized. How do you experience the differences between Japanese and European audiences?
I'm flattered that it's viewed so aesthetically as an art, especially since I am Japanese where shibari originated. I appreciate this positively that many people enjoying many various Shibari around the world.
The difference between Japan and other countries is that in Japan, the perception of shibari is sexually degraded and obscene, and generally perceived perverted in the world of "over-ground". It’s heavily objectified and frowned upon. There's still a strong innuendo of it being a secret pastime in Japan, and it's generally perceived as a perverse act that most people wouldn't like. So when I look at other countries, I see a wide variety to enjoyment and different perceptions, which I find it envious.
Does your work – or its meaning – change when you perform outside of Japan?
Of course, there are compliance requirements at the performance venues.
Within these limitations, and working within the rules, it's rather difficult to fully express my style, but what I always strive is to make it easy for the majority to see…expressed with clarity
My target audience ranges from the general public to hardcore fans, but I often express it in an erotic way, sometimes with humor making it easily understandable to the general public. In other words, the expression in other countries is somewhat restrained.
You have a background in martial arts. What role do movement, control, and body dynamics play in your tying?
My style significant characteristics by the way I use my body.
It's the way I use my body in Japanese martial arts, which I've cultivated over many years.
It's something you won't see in other styles. The approach to the partners’ body itself, the methods of controlling the body without using ropes, the stimulation that reaches deep into the body.
I believe that by mixing these things, it's possible to lead to a better sexual pleasure.
I think it has a tremendous impact not only on the aesthetic form, but also on the sense of fulfillment, impact and influences to create satisfaction.
On stage, an intense tension arises between you and your model. What does responsibility mean to you in that moment – physically as well as mentally?
The tension on stage is like a battle; this isn't limited to the stage, but it's like a serious showdown.
I approach it with determination, within the LIMIT of what I can take as a responsibility for that moment, to the model and the higher that level, the better the result.
Responsibility, guarantees, and determination—when these three conditions are met, you can see the possible limits. I always make sure not to exceed those limits.
I believe that mental and physical tension is essential for “mutual” understanding and communication. I think that influence is greatly reflected in the expression.
With your growing international recognition, your life has certainly changed. How do you deal with this popularity – and what does your life look like beyond the stage?
Indeed, I am very grateful that my reputation is growing year by year, and the number of people who love my style continues to increase.
Whether in Japan or overseas, I give lessons, sessions, and do media and publication work… etc, my workload keeps increasing, and I hardly have any time to rest. (Laughs)
Speaking of big changes, not only SM and bondage enthusiasts, but also porn stars, models, influencers, mistresses, and other people with a positive view of sex have a very high opinion of me, so I think my influence on vanilla people has become stronger.
My strength is physical body usage so currently, I started teaching more about how to use the body in general to upgrade sex, without using ropes, bondage or BDSM.
What role do music and atmosphere play in your performances? Is there a particular mood you aim to create, or does it emerge in the moment?
I basically don't believe in practice or rehearse. It’s because what I do is like a live session. However, the role that music plays is actually very important, just as important as lighting. Communication with the model, the model's ability to express, the flowing music, and the GOOD lighting—when these three match, something reallyMAGICAL is created. It will move and inspire the audiences; sometimes it will be erotically exciting, sometimes very humorous and funny, emotionally charged, deeply moving, and sometimes even bring tears to their eyes.
Music is not just a way to measure time; it has the power to change the atmosphere the mood of its environment.
While live shows can sometimes be performed without music, doing so in silence requires great courage. This is because it demands not only the skill to captivate the audience, but also the ability to create an environment that keeps them engaged and drawn in. The role of music is therefore extremely important.
You perform internationally. How important is your connection to Japan – artistically or personally?
There are various differences between Japan and other countries, cultural differences, language barriers, and so on, but I believe that we are all THE SAME human, and aside from likes and dislikes, the basic human system remains the same.
I like to dedicate myself to seek and provide a higher level of sexual pleasures and orgasms to people who have a positive view of sex whether that be domestically in Japan or not.
I believe that exchange between Japan and the world is essential to create even better sexual awareness and pleasures, and to allow more people to enjoy better sex and better bondage.
I believe this would be a waste if we kept this technology only in Japan. So I want to improve continuously so people all over the world can experience the simple and same pleasures and arousals to enjoy themselves. This is my mission which encourages me to travel all over the world.
What can visitors of obscene expect from your performance and your workshop?
The answer is simple. If you have a point of view that always seeks better shibari, better sexual arousals, and better sex, I believe you will enjoy it and be able to achieve One rank, elevated satisfactions and orgasms.
I am very theoretical and sometimes believe in pure science, but fundamentally I place great importance on appealing to primal instincts.
I will do my best to continue being the positive influence on everyone, so if you are interested, especially in GOOD sex, please come see me and Yagami Style!
